For the individual squares i used the first 4 rows of this lovely square pattern: Made by connecting various granny squares, the blanket looks like the pixelated mario from the original super mario bros. If you have never made one, they are not difficult, please see my previous instructable here.
To follow this instructable, you must be able to crochet a granny square. I am planning to make one for each of my little brothers (who are really 27 years old, but about 12 at heart) for christmas. This is absolutely the coolest and most perfect geeky gift for my brothers!
