Skip the chain stitch next to the hook and then work 1 sc (single crochet) into the next 2 chain stitches. The maple leaf is easy to crochet with irish crochet technique using mostly back loop single crochet and slip stitches. Skip the next chain stitch and then work a slip stitch into the 2nd next chain stitch.
Remove the stitch marker, 1 sl st in. With dk cotton yarn and a 3 mm crochet hook my crochet maple leaf is 10 x 10cm height and length, with fingering weight yarn and a 2.2mm crochet hook my crochet maple leaf is 7 x 7cm height and length.
